Dangerous Territory

Malia: Mom, I have the same hands as you.
Me: You're right...we do have the same hands.
Malia: Does Cole have daddy's hands?
Me: I don't know. They don't look like mine so they probably look more like daddy's. We'll have to check when daddy gets home and see if Cole's hands look like Daddy's.
Malia: How do I have yours but Cole has daddy's?
Me: Well, everyone has part of their daddy and party of their mom in them.
(Malia nods, but looks totally lost so I try to explain it a little bit more...but I didn't think she would really understand the whole DNA thing so I tried to keep it super simple)
Me: When a baby is growing in it's mom's tummy, it gets some things from it's mom and some things from it's dad. Like how my eyes are brown but yours are green...that's from Daddy. but you have my hands. Do you understand?

Malia: (after a minute of thinking it over) How does the baby get in your tummy?
Me: uh....(oh crap, oh crap, oh crap!) a mommy and daddy make the baby together and it grows in the mommy's tummy
Malia: How does the mommy and daddy make the baby?
Me: (let's change the subject as quickly as possible!!) After you get married the mom and dad make a baby by loving each other and then the baby grows in the moms tummy and you go to the hospital to have the doctor help the baby come out. Do you remember when we went to the hospital when Cole was born? You were born at a different hospital than Cole.
Malia: Where is the hospital I was born at?
Me: (yes! Subject change worked!!) It's not there anymore...it was torn down because it was so old and they built a new hospital.
Malia: Can we go see my hospital where I was born?
Me: Well I can show you where it used to be but it's not there anymore. Etc etc...

Holy crap!! I was NOT expecting to have this conversation with my 5 year old!! She is way too young to be asking about the birds and the bees! Luckily she accepted those answers easily, but it was a scary moment for me!
